God, Religion

“God won’t go away.”

Religious and spiritual experiences being part of humanity’s genetic heritage, both social scientists and philosophers need to realize that God will never go away and even though many insist that they are the recipients of a final revelation, when we think about the future of religion, we have to assume that religious institutions and ideas are can change. Religions of the future need to be socially relevant and liberating, opposing tyranny and social injustice. They need to afford opportunities for sharing, compassion and peacemaking.

We are at a phase of human development where we have accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge through scientific research in the material world. Accordingly, religions of the future need to work with science and not in opposition to the scientific method, scientifically gathered data, and scientifically conceived theories.

This is important knowledge that must be integrated in all form of religions and religious beliefs and for the future, the only Religion that will survive will be the one that will extend its beliefs toward our natural environment, a resource that is threatened by global warming, pollution, desertification, and the destruction of the rain forests.

Don’t wait for God to save the planet. It will never happen.

The World in 2050

Space tourism is becoming commonplace

The main players in the world are now: the USA, China, Europe, India, Japan, Russia and Brazil, with China and India exercising now a huge economic influence on global politics.

Since the beginning of the millennium, the frantic pace of globalisation has continued and the intercultural connection has now resulted in white Caucasians becoming a minority in the USA and elsewhere in the world.

One in five Europeans is now a Muslim.

Radical Islam and its resentment toward the West continues to produce Jihadists.

Large amounts of nuclear material had been missing from Russia since the early 1990s, and some of this inevitably fell into the wrong hands leaving a deep psychological scar on many people and fuel much paranoia and suspicion between nations.

Despite this tension and the fact that Israel has been the victim of a nuclear attack, progress has been achieved on certain key issues.

Thanks to advanced nanotechnology, across-the-board improvements in energy efficiency and power conservation, widespread deployment of solar, wind and wave power, as well as 4th generation nuclear power, carbon emissions have fallen substantially. However, the delayed reaction of carbon emissions from previous decades is continuing to affect weather patterns and climate stability.

Sea levels have risen over half a metre and are beginning to affect much of the world’s coastal real estate.

Space travel has taken a big leap forward.

Space tourism is becoming commonplace with middle-income citizens enjoying orbital flights. For the super-rich, lunar orbits and even brief excursions to the Moon’s surface are becoming possible. The first permanent scientific station is being planned for Mars.

2020, Generation X, Global politic, Reshaping the world

Debt is slavery

With the last of the Silent Generation passing away, and the Baby Boomers waning in their influence the new decade will see a fresh generation of leaders and decision-makers emerging on the world stage. The so-called “Generation X” will come into power.

Born between the late 1960s and early 1980s, more heterogeneous than the earlier generations, more diverse in race, class, culture and ethnicity, with less respect for rules, authority and established policies, they will be more liberal and progressive than their parents and much less likely to be religious. For most or all of their lives, they have grown up surrounded by computers, making them savvy and comfortable with technology, more flexible and open to new ideas. They will have more respect for the environment and will be more likely to believe in science than religion.

Angry at the social, political and economic legacy bequeathed to them, they will use their newly acquired and newfound power to build a totally different kind of world. They will no longer be bowing to the demands of the Baby Boomers and they will not let the Millennial Generation get a free ride when it will come to paying their fair share. From 2020 onwards, there will be is a shift of money and resources away from senior citizens and towards those in their middle years.

Property and inheritance laws, pensions, retirement plans and a number of elderly benefits will undergo significant changes as Gen-Xers will work to stem the gap between themselves and their parents. Banks and financial institutions will be reformed to focus on long-term accountability, rather than short-term profits and risk-taking.

Employees will gain more rights, freedoms and flexibility in the workplace while social medias will continue to drive the spread of democracy around the world.

Canada is becoming a nation of immigrants

Canada Immigration

Canada has the fastest-growing population of any G8 nation, with two-thirds of the growth coming from immigration. These newcomers are radically transforming our elite educational institutions. This is especially true of immigrants from Philippines, India and China, who collectively make up about a third of all migrants to Canada, and who tend to exhibit high levels of academic performance.

There’s a century-old precedent for all of this. At Harvard University in 1908, Jews represented only about 9% of the student body. By 1925, following on the great waves of immigrants from Europe and Russia, the proportion had gone up to 28%. At Columbia, the number reached 40%. Twenty-eight per cent of Jews at Harvard in the 1920s graduated with distinction, versus just 15% for gentiles. But just a quarter of Jews participated in Harvard athletics, half the rate for gentiles.

Sound familiar?

No doubt it’s true that Canadian children could stand to watch a little less television and do a little more homework.

The Mayan calendar reaches the end of its cycle

Mayan-Calendar-600x450

The Mayan Long count Calendar

Renowned for having the only fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas as well as their art, architecture, mathematical and astronomical systems, the Mayans lived thousands of years ago.

As part of their culture, the Mayans used a Long Count calendar. The calendar starts with the date of August 11, 3114 BC and ends on December 21, 2012 of the present era.

Despite the facts the Mayans not believing themselves that any such event would occur, this date, over the years, has generated enormous publicity, with many predicting the nearby end of the world, or a transformative event of some kind waiting to happen.

Today, the media are playing a huge role in whipping up a frenzy of speculation. From a polar reversal of the Earth, to spectacular runaway climate disaster or other cataclysm Various threats are debated; even the second coming of Christ is predicted.

My predictions:

First, none of this will happen: for one, Christ never existed and, the only reason why the Mayans stop their calendar on that specific date is that there was no more room on the stone they used to go further.

Second, close to the end of the year, we will numerous hoaxes creating further confusion and paranoia. Some people will be engaging in panic buying of food, or building shutters and barricades around their homes. Others will spend their entire life savings to enjoy one last day before the predicted end of the world.

Finally, for a small minority of troubled individuals, their belief will develop into a self-fulfilling prophecy. In their misguided certainty that the world will actually end, resorting to extreme or illegal behaviour, they will put themselves and others at risk.

While there will be a brief spike in the number of murders, rapes, accidents and suicides worldwide, for the vast majority of rational people, December 21st, 2012 will passes without incident and life will continue as normal on December 22nd.

Whitney Houston, musical superstar, dies

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston (1963-2012)

With her incredible vocal range and purity, runway good looks and girl-next-door charm, Whitney Houston was an out-of-the-box superstar when she arrived on the music scene in 1985.

Her meteoric rise included record-setting hits, groundbreaking videos and a promising film career. But by the mid-1990s, rumors of marital woes and drug abuse began to tarnish her image and she took a downward spiral that saw her name emblazoned in sordid tabloid headlines rather than glowing reports of musical success.

Could we survive the decline of America? Yes we can!

2060, American downfall, International order, Roman Empire

The American Downfall: 2060

If there is a lesson to be learned from History, it is that all great empires and world orders are transient. The institutions they erect, the economic systems they support, they rise and fall and the earth is still turning.

Some would argue that the downfall of the Roman Empire brought an end not just to Roman rule but to Roman government and law and to an entire economic system stretching from Northern Europe to North Africa. Culture, the arts, even progress in science and technology, were set back for centuries. To them, I would say that this was only a major setback for the Romans. For the rest of the world, it was liberation. Like the Roman Empire before, the United States of America is creating now the necessary conditions for its own downfall.

History has a way to repeat itself.

After the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, British control of the seas and the balance of great powers on the European continent provided relative security and stability. Prosperity grew, personal freedoms expanded, and the world was knit more closely together by revolutions in commerce and communication. With the outbreak of World War I, the age of settled peace and advancing liberalism collapsed into an age of hyper-nationalism, despotism and economic calamity. The once-promising spread of democracy and liberalism halted and then reversed course, leaving a handful of outnumbered and besieged democracies living nervously in the shadow of fascist and totalitarian regimes. Notwithstanding Nazi Germany and imperial Japan domination, the collapse of the British and European orders in the 20th century did not produce a new dark age.

Would the end of the present American-dominated order have less dire consequences?

The end of the era of American pre-eminence in the world will never mean the end of the present international order. It is if there is one. American power may diminish, but the underlying foundations of the liberal international order will survive and thrive. The United States and all rising powers like China and India will continue to live within the framework of the current international system.

The post-American world that will take place around 2060 will not look very different from the actual American world except for the fact that unlike today the new world order will no longer be dictated by one nation own egocentric interests and preferences. The new priority will not be to preserve the state’s control of wealth and the power that it brings. It will be to survive in a world where resources are becoming scarce, in a world were humanity will be looking across the galaxy for new resources and to escape the confines of its now overcrowded home planet. American predominance would then be replaced by some kind of multi-polar harmony.

Yes indeed, at first, conflicts will erupt as a result of fluctuations in this newly found delicate power equation. But necessity being the mother of all inventions, the world will soon realize that what is killing humanity is religion politic corruption and greed. Nations will sit down to create the world they would like to live in when we are no longer the world’s only superpower. International order will soon be the final result of global humanity evolution, a combination of advancing science and technology, an increasingly global economy, strengthened international institutions and evolving norms of international behavior. It will no longer be imposed by those who have the will and capacity to defend it.

Remember: Forces of evolution, forces of nature will always transcend the actions of men and nations, not God, not even America.
