Political Vetting: How well do you really know your candidate?

07 Friday Sep 2018

From now on, woe betide the party that having attested to the character and probity of its candidates, politicians and staff, is revealed to have been conned or simply been sloppy in its vetting. The political pain will be far worse than the earlier discomfort of often humiliatingly intense investigation of candidates.

In days gone by, political candidate vetting was never a very rigorous process. If you had a union leader, heart surgeon or hockey star as a good prospect, you really did not want to know anything else about the past of this political candidate. Unless you were very unlucky, past events or incidents of his or her life such as criminal conviction of any kind, spousal abuse, adultery or child molestation were unlikely to ever emerge.

Back then, the final test in candidate vetting, was the senior recruiter looking the prospect meaningfully in the eye, and saying with great solemnity, “Now, is there anything you have not disclosed that there is even a distant prospect, if it were revealed, that would bring shame or harm to the party or yourself?”

Today, that test is no longer sufficient.

Serious archival research, social media tracking, and even private investigators are now the norm and political parties are no exception to the rule. Political parties must now meet the new standard. The price of failure to do so is too high to pay.

Invasive inquiry, aggressive reference checking, difficult final interviews and even un dated resignation letters are the new standard, the new norm.

The Eisenhower or Urgent vs. Important Things To Be Done Matrix

Stop spending most of your productive time attending to other people’s priorities.

Not planning your week is bad.

Planning your week without taking your personal priorities in consideration is even worse. It means you will be able to handle everything “on your plate” but you won’t actually make any progress towards your own goals. Stop spending most of your productive time attending to other people’s priorities.

Your main priorities shall be everything about YOU and YOUR goals. Unless you proactively block time for them and consistently choose to prioritize them, you are in a reactive state where you are only following everyone else’s priorities.

Have you heard of the Eisenhower or Urgent vs. Important Matrix?

It is a really powerful tool that can multiply your effectiveness tenfold. It consists of 4 quadrants that classify your daily activities according to two parameters: level of urgency and level of importance.

For most people it looks like this:

You want to be productive! Spend 80% of your time in quadrant II of the Matrix.

This will allow you to pro-actively work on new opportunities and high-leverage projects instead of spending all your time reacting to pressing issues and other people’s needs. As a result, you will be able to make significant progress towards your goals, actively prevent crisis from happening and lead a more balanced, calm and focused life.

Prioritize according to YOUR GOALS.

Which actions and projects to prioritize should be based on what is working and beneficial towards achieving your goals and not what you feel like doing.

Too Many Emails

20 Wednesday Jun 2018

The #1 enemy

I do not have a minute to waste; life is too short.

I am up at 5:00 every morning and kicks things off with a fairly regimented routine.

Most of my morning are focused on planning my day. By 8:00, I am ready to tackle every issue that is to be resolved.

With a jam-packed day, there is one major nuisance that I just can’t be bothered with.

Other than Skype interview request from my beloved clients, I hate email.

With email, the whole world comes across at you; it is your agenda number one enemy and it is terrible, not to say a total waste of time.

Let it be also known that I took my work email out of my phone. All those emails would be going unread, waiting in my inbox, magically multiplying the way unread emails seem to do.

You want to retain my services!

Other than wanting to retain my services, don’t bother me.

You have an urgent issue to resolve and need my services!

It’s all in my auto-reply, which goes to every single recipient who sends me an email:

“Thank you for reaching out. Being overwhelmed with unsolicited requests, I will not be answering your email. This does not mean that I am not available for business! If you need immediate attention or have to urgently deal with a commanding issue, it will be my pleasure to help and assist you. Do not hesitate to call me at the following number: 1-613-449-3278”

Every email does not demand an instant reply or a reply at all. Even if I do eventually get back, there’s no need to apologize if it takes a few hours or even a few days. I slashed the “Sorry for the delayed reply …” from my email vocabulary. I refuse to set the expectation that it’s abnormal to take a little time to reply.

I have opted out of one of the most important communication channels in today’s working world. It is not because everyone else emails that I should. Why should I?

I hate leaving people hanging as much as I hate being left hanging.

We live in a high-volume 24/7 email world. People are glued to their screens.

Don’t expect me to act the same way.

Communicating to people that I am not going to play that game is important. This way, they don’t think that I might have fall off a cliff or just feel extremely slighted annoyed or pissed off.

Yes indeed, I am going off the grid for a bit and I will be checking email less frequently.

This doesn’t mean that I will not be immediately taking care of urgent matters or business issues; it just means that if you have some urgent issues to resolve you have to call me. You have my personal phone number.

Just don’t abuse it!

Get Your Priorities Straight!

EMPOWERING YOURSELF Has Nothing To Do With HAVING time; It Is Everything About MAKING Time

Get your priorities straight!

How are you supposed to know the right path when you have no idea where you want to go or what you want to do?

Setting goals that are important to you is the first step to getting your priorities straight. Once you know what you really want to achieve, it is really easy to prioritize everything in your life and the only thing you ever need to ask yourself before considering doing anything is: “How is this helping me achieve my goals?”

Starting your day checking your emails or chatting at the coffee machine will make it hard for you to gather the focus and motivation you need to tackle your most important tasks and projects at hand later in the day.

It does not matter WHEN you wake up. What matters is what you do when you wake up, what you do with the first two to three hours of your day. Putting in the work towards your goals will help you win the day early.

Postponing your most important tasks until later in the day will dramatically increase the likelihood of not getting them done at all.

Get Your Priorities Straight!

How on earth are you supposed to know the right path when you have no idea where you want to go or what you want to do?

Setting goals that are important to you is the first step to getting your priorities straight. Once you know what you really want to achieve, it is really easy to prioritize everything in your life and the only thing you ever need to ask yourself before considering doing anything is: “How is this helping me achieve my goals?”

If you say “YES” to everything, you don’t have any priorities. You get distracted and will never achieve any of your life goals. If you say “YES” to the wrong things, you go against your life priorities.

Saying “NO” over and over again to everything that is distracting you from your life aligned priorities is the only way to empower yourself and entitle you to live the life of your dreams, to live your preferred future.

Obvious instant-gratification activities like sitting in front of the TV set, partying for the sake of partying, unrelated goals meetings, calls, articles or online courses that will never help you achieve your goals are to be barred from your agenda or “To Do” list.

Building Systems That Preserve Knowledge

Knowledge Management Systems, Transitioning

“Invest in people like they will stay forever. Build systems like they will leave tomorrow”

Someone on your team announces at the staff meeting that he or she is leaving for a new job; someone on your team is stealing from you and you have to let that person go; someone on your team suddenly dies. You are suddenly facing a health issue; you are suddenly involved in a serious accident and incapacitated for a long period of time. You simply decide to retire. You simply decide to sell your business.

When people suddenly leave, die or simply have to go, no one remembers what that person was doing or how that person was doing it. No one remembers how the company did, how the company use to deal with such and such a situation, what is the most appropriate action to deal with such and such a situation and where to find the critical information that is urgently required.

In today’s work environment, employee’s turnover is becoming more and more frequent. It is not uncommon for workers to put in only a few years before moving on. It is not uncommon for an aging business owner to decide to retire or sell is business to spend more quality time with his family and friends or even to pursue other goals. These trends, far from disappearing will only intensify in the future. Add in a revolving door of contractors and freelancers, and the whole thing may soon start get pretty messy.

In today’s economy, people are the company, people are the business. More than often, the business owners are the business. They bring in the innovations and ideas, they build the products and services, they craft the branding and marketing campaigns. When they leave, for whatever reason, it is as if they are taking a slice of the business with them. Between documents spread out on their desks, the shared drives and all these files buried in their personal desktops, all these files that may get wiped out when employees leave, the past work and information you need to access is scattered to all digital winds.

Having the right systems and right tools in place will help you bridge the gap and transitioning when employees, teammates or business partners suddenly leave for new opportunities. Having the right systems and right tools in place will help you bridge the gap and transitioning when you will decide to retire or sell your business. Having the right systems and right tools in place will help you maximizing your assets.

Let us help you.

The White Straight Man

15 Thursday Mar 2018

“What do you mean I’m privileged? I know a lot of minorities who have a lot more than I do.”

Do we give too much “space” and importance to minorities?

Today, the only things we read and hear about every day is this outcry about women rights, native Canadian and Americans rights, LGBT rights, Muslims rights and so on and so on, all these people blaming the White Straight Man for their misery.

First, let me set the record straight:

GENESIS 1:

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

My position is quite simple: All men, male and female, whatever their race or color are born equals.

This being said, my question is:

What’s wrong with the Straight White Man, male and female?

The past five decades have not been very kind to the white straight man, male and female. Until the 1960s, the white straight man comfortably sat unchallenged atop the cultural and economic pyramid. He did not have to deal with all these disgruntled people and minorities that we read about and hear complaining every day about their despair and misery.

And then the Straight White Man world exploded.

Today, like it or not, disgruntled people and minorities are everywhere, complaining, blaming and accusing the White Straight Man, male and female about anything and everything.

If the White Straight Man does not agree with their condition, their way of life, their vision of the future, he is conveniently labeled as a racist, homophobic, misogynist individual and personality.

Today, the White Straight Man, male and female, being guilty as charged and condemned without a fair trial, lynched on the public place, is no longer included in anything and no longer part of the conversation. His right to speak does no longer exist.

Freedom of speech for the White Straight Man no longer exist

Unsuccessful, disgruntled, frustrated, depraved people of every minorities confronted with the power structure are now challenging every laws and institutions that they wrongly believe that are confining them to traditional roles in the private sphere.

Instead of empowering themselves by doing what would right to do, sticking to their guns, unsuccessful, disgruntled, frustrated, depraved people of every minorities are now questioning traditional conceptions of gender and sexuality.

Don’t talk to me about privilege.

All these so-called “rights movements” that we see today, instead of promoting and building a fairer, more diverse society and rectifying all possible wrongs that may have happened in the past are only successful in creating more opposition, more animosity and more violence as a direct assault on the well-established moral values of a world global silent community that believe in a better world and rightfully condemned all immoral values.

Today grievance defined the targets of the frustrated minorities. They battle against liberal academics and politicians by stressing multiculturalism and celebrating the contribution of minorities while distorting and minimizing the achievements of white men.

As for the White Straight Man, man and female, they silently fume about companies and schools giving preference to less-qualified people and minorities in an effort to achieve greater diversity.

It is now time to fight back

For the White Straight Man, male and female, it is time to react, it is time to fight back. We are told that we live in a democracy, where everyone has the same rights, the same opportunities. Hello!

Reality Check:

We now live in a democracy where the White Straight Man no longer benefit of the Freedom of Speech right. We now live in a democracy where the White Straight Man, to get a job, shall indicate on his or her résumé that he or she is part of a minority group or a member of the LGBT community.

Here is my take on this:

We do live in a democracy, where everyone has the same opportunities I do and we need to move on. If the fact that you are a woman, black or gay is what defines you, you definitely have a problem, not me.

Talking about privilege only further divides people.
