Lead or Get Out of the Way. Simply Managing the Status Quo Is No Longer Acceptable.

People who play defense and avoid offense are nothing else than “leader-caretakers.” True leaders, despite the tumultuous times and forces swirling around them in this global age of disruption, constantly position themselves to boldly guide their organizations into the headwinds of change.

Outpacing change.

Leader-accelerators are the exceptional leaders of the 21st century. They think big and make great things happen in almost any circumstance. They are the “force-multipliers” and “architects” behind exceptional results.

The ability to survive, thrive and accelerate results, both individually and organizationally, is tied directly to the ability to outpace change in the external environment.

This truth is captured in two operating principles strongly at play in the modern marketplace.

  • The Today’s Age of Disruption principle: To win today, individuals and organizations must be able to change internally faster and more dynamically than the speed and magnitude of external change.
  • The Tomorrow’s Age of Disruption principle: To win tomorrow, individuals and organizations must create internal change capacity and capability faster than the rate of change projected to happen externally.

When the rate of change outside is more than what it is inside, be sure that the end is near. Irrelevance, and even extinction, is inevitable when leaders fail to heed age of disruption principles.

Thinking bigger.

As the world continues to spin at a faster rate, it is throwing off problems and opportunities at a higher rate in every days of our life. It is the leader-accelerators who can identify these problems and opportunities surrounding themselves and move forward with disruptive visions that can completely alter the landscape.

Today, simply managing the status quo is no longer acceptable for anyone. Whatever you are planning, whatever you are thinking, think faster and think bigger.

Choosing your strategy.

Today’s business leaders would be wise to disrupt rather than be disrupted. For these leader-accelerators, the “Change Before You Have To” approach is a better strategy than the “Change Because You Need To” response. By being proactive, by taking control of whatever could be thrown at them or happened in the future help them to avoid playing the game of business as accidental victim.

In this world of constant global disruption, being a “Caretaking Leader”, “Fence sitting” no longer is a viable option. Simply managing the status quo is no longer acceptable. Lead or Get Out of the Way. Simply managing the status quo is no longer acceptable. in today’s global economy, waiting for the winds to change or blow over, leaving everything the same as before is a recipe for disaster.

Lead or get out of the way.

Reputation Management in The Age of Internet

Online reputation Management, Strategic planning, Systemic Thinking

“Eventually somebody will write something unpleasant about your business. You better have a plan.”

Reputation management in the age of the internet is essential. These days, public brand sentiment is a game changer in how people shop. This is a reality that every entrepreneur must come to terms with.

The task of managing an online reputation is not an easy one, nor is it a one-size-fits-all process. Here are four things that many entrepreneurs get wrong about managing their online reputation.

1. Underestimating the value of consistency.

Managing an online reputation is not something that can be done in an afternoon or over the weekend. For as long as your business is operating, shaping and maintaining an online reputation is a job that never ends.

In the startup stage, consistently interacting with people online, responding to reviews, and creating thought leadership content won’t require a significant time commitment. However, once business picks up, maintaining consistency will start to become harder and harder. If you are spending between one and two hours per day staying on top of your online reputation, it is probably time to consider bringing on a specialist, at least on a part-time basis.

2. Assuming star ratings are all that matter.

Customer reviews are an essential ingredient to an online reputation. A big part of the process is simply getting customers to review your product, service, and overall experience.

Consumers these days have more options than ever before. People can now be extremely picky in terms of how and where they spend their money. They look to online reviews to get an unbiased third-party opinion of a brand, product, or service.

As you develop a strategy to gather reviews, you need to design prompts that give people the whole picture of what it is like to do business with you.

3. Negative sentiment should be left alone.

No one likes getting negative reviews. However, negative reviews are not the grim reaper. The way you react to bad sentiment says “WAY” more about your business than the review itself. Regardless of how painful it is to read bad reviews, you need to bite the bullet and try to respond in a positive way. If you play your cards right, you can turn this into a positive and gain a loyal customer.

Responding to negative reviews requires a certain touch.

First and foremost, you do not want to respond right away. The last thing you want is to respond while emotions are high. Second, try your best to empathize. Ultimately, your brand reputation depends on your ability to put yourself in the shoes of the customer and meet their needs. Lastly, do your best to try and take the conversation offline. The initial public response should be cordial, but then encourage the bulk of the interaction with the nitty-gritty details to take place in private.

4. Thinking there is a ‘quick-fix’ for reputation issues.

An online reputation can always take a bad turn.

“A reputation is something that can take 30 years to build, yet be completely destroyed in 30 seconds.”

In the age of social media and constant connectedness, we see crises happen all the time. If this unfortunate event happens to you, the key is to not let panic set in, as this leads to rash decisions.

In the old days of the internet, many companies assumed they could combat poor sentiment by forging their own positive reviews or paying professional writers to write long, detailed praises on major review platforms. While this certainly worked for a hot second, review sites wised up to these devious tactics. Trying to sidestep the process of gaining authentic reviews can get you into serious trouble.

Additionally, the simple fact that people today are bombarded with insane amounts of brand messaging every day, most consumers have gotten pretty good at spotting bunkum. Resorting to sketchiness to try and mend a damaged reputation can often times put you even deeper in the hole.

When you are in difficulty, you need to accept that there is no quick solution. Getting people back on your side is a long process that often times requires deep-seated change. The most important thing you can do is critically listen to what people are saying and make a conscious effort to usher in a fundamental transformation.

One last word

The task of managing your online reputation will be around as long as your business’s doors are open. Not everything is going to be peaches and cream. You are going to hit bumps in the road and need to know how to handle it.

Outpacing Change

Change management, Strategic planning, Systemic Thinking

Fence-sitting is no longer an option. To stay competitive, you must outpace change.

Simply managing the status quo is no longer acceptable. True leaders constantly position themselves to boldly guide their organizations into change. They think big and make great things happen in almost any circumstance.

“When the rate of change outside is more than what it is inside, be sure that the end is near.”

To win today, individuals and organizations must be able to change internally faster and more dynamically than the speed and magnitude of external change and, to win tomorrow, they must create internal change capacity and capability faster than the rate of change projected to happen externally.

Irrelevance, and even extinction, is inevitable when leaders fail to heed age of disruption principles.

Thinking bigger

As the world continues to spin at a faster rate, it will throw off problems and opportunities at a higher rate and in every nook and cranny of the globe. It is the leader who will identify these problems and opportunities, surround himself with great talent and move forward with disruptive visions that will completely alter the landscape.

Whatever you are thinking, think bigger.

Choosing your strategy

We suggest that the change-before-you-have-to approach is a better strategy than the change-because-you-have-to philosophy. Today’s global leaders and organizations would be wise to disrupt rather than be disrupted.

Care-taking no longer is a viable option.

Cambridge Analytica Crisis: A Lesson in Privacy and Integrity

Long-running issues with privacy and integrity came to a head in Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica crisis.

In the social media world, the pace of change has always been brisk. But 2018 marked a true inflection point. Long-running issues with privacy and integrity came to a head in Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica crisis: “Users began to question the value networks provide and seek more meaningful ways to engage.”

Against this backdrop, intimate new social media formats have risen for connecting and sharing content. A radically new social paradigm is emerging: “Consumers want to be treated like individuals, not demographics.”

Consumers are now demanding more value in exchange for their time and information.

The magic number: $756,000.00

The real message is that people need to get more engaged in planning what they want their future to look like.

The magic number for retirement savings in Canada is $756,000 and, while that is the average amount Canadians believe they need to save for retirement, up to 90 per cent do not have a formal plan on how to get there.

A majority of Canadians, 53 per cent, are not sure whether they are saving enough during their work years. 37 per cent are not even thinking about retirement, pretexting they just cannot save.

This situation is even worse for women: only 22 per cent have a formal retirement plan or even have a good idea of how much income they will need, versus 32 per cent of men. By age fifty-five, 43 per cent of women and 27 per cent of men lack a retirement and transition plan. The real message buried in these statistics is that people need to get more engaged in planning what they want their future to look like.

There is no longer a magic age 65 or 55 when we are all going to quit work cold turkey and do something completely different. We are living longer, and a prosperous middle-class is realizing that retirement is about the journey, not the destination.

The same is to be said about all business owners. The average organization has undergone five enterprise changes in the past three years and 73 per cent of organizations expect more change initiatives in the next few years. Unfortunately, many organizations fail to implement change effectively. In fact, only a third of change efforts are clear successes, 16 per cent show mixed results, and half of them are clear failures.

Today, people of all ages, men and women, all business owners and all business organizations need to get more engaged in planning what they want their future to look like. The problem: most people are wearing to many hats and are overwhelmed with daily responsibilities and accountabilities with the result that by age 55 or 65 less and less people can afford to retire to enjoy what could have been their preferred future.

You are looking forward to maximize your assets, your business is growing fast and you need to adapt, you are thinking about retirement, SSTM, in collaboration with JMD Systemics and Succession Transition Strategies, helps you to succeed with the challenging process of business and personal transition.

Let us help you maximize your assets and secure the best possible future:

FOR YOU, YOUR WAY.

We Bring the Experts to the Table

The Eisenhower or Urgent vs. Important Things To Be Done Matrix

25 Monday Jun 2018

Priorities, Productivity, Strategic planning, Systemic Thinking

Stop spending most of your productive time attending to other people’s priorities.

Not planning your week is bad.

Planning your week without taking your personal priorities in consideration is even worse. It means you will be able to handle everything “on your plate” but you won’t actually make any progress towards your own goals. Stop spending most of your productive time attending to other people’s priorities.

Your main priorities shall be everything about YOU and YOUR goals. Unless you proactively block time for them and consistently choose to prioritize them, you are in a reactive state where you are only following everyone else’s priorities.

Have you heard of the Eisenhower or Urgent vs. Important Matrix?

It is a really powerful tool that can multiply your effectiveness tenfold. It consists of 4 quadrants that classify your daily activities according to two parameters: level of urgency and level of importance.

For most people it looks like this:

You want to be productive! Spend 80% of your time in quadrant II of the Matrix.

This will allow you to pro-actively work on new opportunities and high-leverage projects instead of spending all your time reacting to pressing issues and other people’s needs. As a result, you will be able to make significant progress towards your goals, actively prevent crisis from happening and lead a more balanced, calm and focused life.

Prioritize according to YOUR GOALS.

Which actions and projects to prioritize should be based on what is working and beneficial towards achieving your goals and not what you feel like doing.
