Do Not Jeopardize Your Reputation

Credibility, Good reputation, Privacy, Trust

Reputations are no longer built on a “Do What I Say, Not as I Do” mentality.

You take your careers very seriously. You pour a great deal of energy into cultivating your relationships and growing a network of professionals you either work with or hope to work with. You spend countless hours combing through your online resumes and profiles. You want to be taken seriously, to be considered credible and influential. You fine-tune your communication skills and polish your presence both, online and in person. But, what happens when you are off the clock?

How do you behave when you are out of the office?

Your reputation is built on you, both in and out of the office, both in person and online. Credibility is built on consistency and you can only be consistent in your behavior and actions when you are mindful every day and in every circumstance. There is always someone seeing you or watching you.

“Just because you sit behind a screen does not mean you are not seen”

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and company, all these online social media platforms create a way for you to communicate with those you want to be connected to. Your reach does not stop there. These mediums also communicate to the entire world who you are. Just because you sit behind a screen does not mean you are not seen. Today, more than ever, always be mindful of what you post online. Political commentary, strong opinions, excessive personal information and activities may cast our reputation in a negative light. Your posts and comments can be easily misconstrued.

If there is any doubt in your mind when writing a post, do not post it. If your posts are anything other than informative, educational or inspiring, if they fail to convey a message kindly, refrain from posting them and sharing them altogether.

“A good reputation, trust and credibility are built on consistency”

We all deserve to let our hair down when we step out of the office. However, always keep in mind that there is always someone seeing or watching you. You must always protect your personal and professional reputation. Behavior that causes others to question your persona authenticity can jeopardize your reputation.

A good reputation, trust and credibility are built on consistency. It is only when your behavior is consistent in and out of the office, that people will really trust you and believe that what they see is the real you. Always be mindful and know that everyone is everywhere.

“It is a small world; people talk, and others listen”

Your reputation is the result of the collective experiences and interactions you maintain with people outside of the office. How you communicate in and out of the office is what shapes your reputation, not the moments you are in the spotlight. If you fail to communicate with consistency, those you influence will fail to do so, too.

Today, even if they do not know them, when there is a decision to be made, most of the people will act upon the recommendation of others. People talk, and others listen. Whether during a high-stakes meeting or during a casual conversation, always be clear and concise. Focus on your body language and be an active, intentional listener. When you make others a priority, they will do the same for you and those who matter most to your success.

“In today’s world, there is no more such thing as privacy”

Our modern-day world does not allow us to compartmentalize our lives anymore. In this world of constant observation, our words and daily actions, all these things that build a reputation are broadcast for the world to see. Individual and professional reputations are no different than major corporations’ reputation.

Consider some highly regarded names, names like Buffet and Gates. They are consistent in their messaging and delivery. They walk their talk throughout all aspects of their brand. Their reputations are well managed.

The fact is, that you cannot manage your reputation through a one-time branding campaign. You must develop it through consistent behaviors that create trust in those who know and observe you. You cannot just say something is important; your actions must reflect it.

Reputations are no longer built on a “Do What I Say, Not as I Do” mentality.

Consistency is key to credibility.

Guard your reputation with your Life

Honesty, Reputation, Trust

A good reputation is critical, maintain and guard your reputation with your life

Now, that you have decided to kill the excuses and to give yourself or your business a powerful new image, remember this: Reputation, especially one of honesty, is the cornerstone of power. So much depends on reputation that you have to maintain it and guard it with your life. Through reputation alone, you can intimidate any enemy or rival and win all of your fights; let it slips, you will find yourself vulnerable, and attacked on all sides.

Make your reputation unassailable

Always be alert to potential attacks on your reputation and prevent them before they happen. Learn to destroy your enemies by opening holes in their own reputations. Then, stand aside and let public opinion hang them.

Understand this: Doubt is a powerful weapon. Once you let it out of the bag with insidious rumors, your opponents are in a horrible dilemma. They can deny the rumors, even prove that you have slandered them, but a layer of suspicion will always remain: Why are they defending themselves so desperately? Maybe the rumor has some truth to it? If, on the other hand, they take the high road and ignore you, the doubts, unrefuted, will be even stronger.

If done correctly, the sowing of rumors can so infuriate and unsettle your rivals that in defending themselves they will make numerous mistakes. This is the perfect weapon if you have no reputation of your own to work from or if you are just starting to build yourself a new one.

After building and establishing a reputation of your own, if you are still under attack, if your rivals or enemies are still barking, it is now time to use a second, gentler tactic, “the fake hypnotism demonstration”: You ridicule your rivals’ reputation. Once you have acquired a solid base of respect, ridiculing your opponents both puts them on the defensive and draws more attention to you, thereby enhancing your own reputation.

Reputation as a power like magic

In the social realm, appearances are the barometer of almost all of our judgements. and never be misled in believing otherwise.

One false slip, one awkward or sudden change in your appearance, can prove disastrous. This is the reason for the supreme importance of making and maintaining a reputation that is of your own creation. Your reputation will protect you in the dangerous game of appearances, distracting the probing eyes of others from knowing what you are really like, and giving you a degree of control over how the world judges you.

Reputation as a power like magic: with one stroke of its wand, it can double your strength. It can also send people scurrying away from you. Whether the exact same deeds appear brilliant or dreadful and depend entirely of the reputation of the doer.

At first, when reinventing yourself, you must work to establish a reputation for one single outstanding quality, whether generosity, honesty or even cunning. This quality will set you apart and get people to talk about you. Then, make your reputation known to as many people as possible, and watch it spreads like wild fire.

A solid reputation increases your presence and exaggerates your strengths without having you to spend much energy. A solid reputation can also create an aura around you that will install respect, even fear. As they say, your reputation inevitably precedes you, and if it inspires respect, a lot of your work is done for you before you arrive on the scene, or utter a single word. Make your reputation simple and base it on one sterling quality. This single quality, efficiency, say, or seductiveness, becomes a kind of calling card that announces your presence and places others under a spell.

Guard your reputation with your life

When you are first establishing it, a good reputation, especially one of honesty, is a treasure to be carefully collected and hoarded. You must strictly protect it, and anticipating all possible attacks from your rivals and enemies becomes your main priority. Once your reputation is solid, just make sure not let yourself get angry or defensive at any slanderous comments of your rivals or enemies; that would only reveal insecurity, not confidence in your reputation. Instead, take the high road, and whatever you do, always make sure to never appear desperate in your self-defense.

On the other hand, while displaying confidence by taking the high road, an attack on another man’s reputation is a potent weapon, particularly when you have less power than he does. Such a more powerful rival or enemy has much more to lose in a reputation battle. Your own thus-far-small reputation gives your rivals and enemies a very small target when they try to return the fire. But this tactic must be practiced with skill; you must not seem to engage in petty vengeance. If you do not break your enemy’s reputation cleverly, you will inadvertently ruin your own. Never go too far in attacks like these, for that will draw more attention to your own vengefulness than to the person or business you are slandering. When your own reputation is firmly established, use subtler tactics, such as satire and ridicule, to weaken your opponent while making you out as a charming rogue.

Since we must live in society and must depend on the opinions of others, there is nothing to be gained by neglecting your reputation. Today, whatever you do or intend to do, a good reputation is critical. Appearances are critical and by not caring how you are perceived, you let others decide this for you. Maintain and guard your reputation with your life: Be the master of your own fate.

Trust, Personal Contacts and Relationships

Trust is everything

Being trusted and knowing whom to trust is the killer skill of life. No other attribute and ability so clearly delineates the difference between success and failure.

Today, trust is playing an increasingly pivotal role in all possible endeavors of humanity, either the business, personal or professional world. You want to make it! Do not do the right thing, the proper thing, and the ethical thing to be done only when someone is watching. Whatever you do, whatever you say, always do or say what is right to be done or said. Be proper and ethical in everything you say or do and above everything else, always make sure to never fudge the truth.

Always do the right things and do them right

When interacting with people, focus all of your attention on the other person; don’t peck away on a digital device. Turn off your phone and tell that person that you are meeting with: “I don’t want to be interrupted while we are talking.” Doing so distinguishes you from this ever-increasing mass of people who, without any kind of respect for their interlocutors, listen with one ear and either talk, or do anything else when they should be listening.

Learn to value true relationships

True relationships are everything! Learn to differentiate between people you can count on, people you can trust and people who only pretend to be reliable and trustworthy. Not everyone is worthy of your trust and not everyone is worthy of being one of your friends. Be trustworthy and reliable, deal only with the reliable and trustworthy and over and above everything else, avoid people who only pretend to be reliable and trustworthy.

You do not have to help or to be friend with everyone

If necessary, put your friend or wannabe friend to the test. There is a time in life where you have to decide who, without any expectation of getting something in return, is worthy to be your friend. There is a time in life, where you have to decide who you are willing to share with and confide in without having to fear, people that you can trust. Those are the only relationships that should matter to you. If you have no such relationships, it is about time to re-evaluate your life. There is no greater warning sign of danger ahead than to be utterly self-sufficient and self-absorbed.

Alone, you are not getting anywhere.
